January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month
Did you know that most cervical cancers are caused by the Human Papilloma Virus(HPV)? There are over 100 different types of HPV. Some HPV’s can cause common warts, plantar warts and laryngeal papilloma’s. Some however can cause cancer. The most aggressive forms of HPV (#16, 18, 31 and 33) are the biggest culprits in causing some cancers seen in women and men. There is a vaccine that has been available for almost 10 years now to protect our daughters and sons from the most aggressive forms of cervical cancer—the HPV vaccine! The vaccine is given in a series of 3 within 6 months of each other. It is used to prevent the most aggressive forms of Human Papilloma Virus that can cause cervical, vaginal, and vulvar cancers in girls; it is also used to prevent oral and throat, penile and anal cancers in boys and is also effective for preventing genital warts. If you have a son or daughter that is 11 or 12 years old, talk to your pediatrician about getting the HPV vaccine which can prevent these cancers. As they say, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!!! Have a blessed day!
